THE SOCIAL NETWORK: THE NEW WORLD

We finally saw The Social Network this weekend. It was absorbing, well-acted, and more interesting than I thought it would be. Jeff Zuckerberg always seemed like a jerk whenever I saw him in a news conference or elsewhere. Yup, he's a jerk. But a couple of things bothered me about the movie: I have occasion to know some defining characteristics of a person with Asperger's Syndrome or other diagnoses on the autism spectrum. He portrayed some classic aspects, as Jesse Eisenberg played him. So, I am left with the question: Is he a jerk? or is he autistic? In that case, some of his actions had different motivations that most people would recognize. And more importantly, what does it mean that he was played this way? I have no answers to these questions, just found myself bugged by them.
So the film could win Best Picture tonight, and it just isn't the best picture. I am guessing it did not come from a great book either, just a timely one. The big story I was hoping to see was not told: Facebook itself is new, really original; we will never relate to each other the same way again because of it. There is a new level of community in our culture that has been created by Facebook and all the social media sites and games that have come after it. And the movie was more about the quest to find social acceptance ( was anyone surprised he could not keep a girlfriend? He's just not interested) and the  battle between the partners and friends (and enemies) in the early years of the company than it was about THIS NEW WORLD. I know it was  scripted from the book which used Eduardo Saverin as its major source, but I thought I was going to get more. And anyway, how is there a book about this before there is a movie? That just seems so 20th century.

Endhiran...most outrageous action scene ever. EVER.

OK, if you do not know me, you may not realize that just as I can spend two hours crying shamelessly through Bright Star or squirming in disgust and fascination at Black Swan, I can also spend a very long time (which is sometimes required in a Bollywood epic) screaming at the top of my lungs over something so gross, so ridiculous, so amazing in CGI, so inconceivable in concept, that I cannot believe I am even watching it. This clip, my friends, is just such a moment. Laugh out loud crazy. Still, I am in awe of the effects and the insanity of the thought process that it took to develop this action sequence. I love every minute of it. And now, I am going back to my John Donne lesson plan. Enjoy, if you can.

BEST FANTASY FILMS OF THE DECADE??

I promise this is the last list I'll publish. I think this listing phase is a part of my progression from "teacher film blogging" to "personal movie lover blogging."  So it is helping my change my focus. I can admit the Film Club blog was a failure, but mostly because we did not need it. Another group, another year, that may change. But for now, those hour long bull sessions after the movies are golden, though I am still not sure how we moved from the Karate Kid to visual physics jokes all over the white board at 6:00 PM last Thursday.
So here is the list. I like most of the films on it, but do not see any justification for either Shrek movie on a fantasy film list. If you are going to add "cartoons" then why not go to anime or stop motion and add Coraline, Cowboy Bebop or Evangelion?

Apparently, the link doesn't work anymore, so here is my second favorite list. I think I had better make my own list from now on. None of these are great, but still worth considering:
